Soldier pile example with DeepXcav (English units)

A soldier pile wall example will be analyzed with DeepXcav. The following data is available:

a) Soil properties: Sand, friction angle = 30 degrees, total unit weight 120 pcf, loading modulus of elasticity Eload= 300 ksf, reloading modulus of elasticity Eur = 900 ksf. Ultimate bond resistance for ground anchors 40 psi.

b) Excavation depth: 25 ft, cantilever stage 10ft, ground anchor at 8ft depth at 15 degrees. Soldier piles spaced at 8ft off center. Include 600 psf traffic surcharge 1ft behind the wall for a length of 20ft.

Objective: Design the soldier pile and the ground achors with allowable stress methodology and obtain a wall embedment safety factor of 1.5.

Initial results of soldier pile analysis

Initial results of soldier pile analysis, critical items in red. Minimum obtained embedment safety factor 1.163 from true FS Mobilized passive (mobilization of available passive resistance from non-linear analysis). Since the system appears to be overstressed we explore the option to include active and passive wall friction within the analysis. In this case, we will assume that wall friction is 50% of the available soil friction.

We then select to optimize the soldier pile properties and the tieback properties from the optimization tab.

Soldier pile example with DeepXcav (Metric units)

A soldier pile wall example will be analyzed with DeepXcav. The following data is available:

a) Soil properties: Sand, friction angle = 30 degrees, total unit weight 19 kN/m3, loading modulus of elasticity Eload= 15000 kPa, reloading modulus of elasticity Eur = 45000 kPa. Ultimate bond resistance for ground anchors 150 kPa.

b) Excavation depth: 7.5 m, cantilever stage 3.5m, ground anchor at 3m depth at 15 degrees. Soldier piles spaced at 2m off center. Include15 kPa traffic surcharge 0.5m behind the wall for a length of 6m.

Objective: Design the soldier pile and the ground achors with allowable stress methodology and obtain a wall embedment safety factor of 1.5.
